16. Weather
There’s hardly a day goes by without evidence somewhere of the erratic weather to which we’re all having to adjust, this weekend in Greece being another example.
In northern Greece on Friday farmers were assessing the damage caused by a severe hailstorm, which destroyed large areas of crops, while a sudden storm in the central city of Larissa brought down trees, blocked roads and damaged parked vehicles. In the space of an hour the nearby city of Trikala saw a dramatic temperature drop from 37° to 19°.
By Saturday an emergency alert had been issued in Thessaloniki where 41 firefighters, 11 fire engines, 3 ground teams, 3 aircraft and a helicopter battled a wildfire, with flames closing in on residential areas.
And then a rare summer storm brought torrential rain and flash flooding to parts of Athens, triggering power outages due to lightning strikes and major roads turning into rivers.
Here in Kalamata there was light rain yesterday evening that lasted for less than 30 seconds and today, Sunday, it’s still sunny but refreshingly cooler than in recent days at only 31°, but forecast to hit 40° by Thursday and Friday.
It may change.
Several hours later and it’s tanking down, and very nice it is too ……

….. and half an hour later the skies are back to blue.
